Best Tier 9 Tanks in World of Tanks (2026 Guide)
Last updated: June 2026
Tier 9 is widely regarded as the sweet spot of World of Tanks — near-Tier-10 firepower, favourable matchmaking, and better credit income than the top tier. This guide covers the best tanks in every class, how matchmaking works at Tier 9, equipment builds, and how to grind to Tier 10 as efficiently as possible.

Why Tier 9 Is the Sweet Spot
Ask any experienced WoT player which tier they enjoy most and the answer is almost always Tier 9. There are three concrete reasons for this:
- Matchmaking advantage: Tier 9 can only see Tier 7–9 battles. There is no Tier 11 in the game, so you are never bottom tier in a +2 spread — unlike Tier 8, which frequently faces Tier 10 tanks. In practice you are top tier in the majority of your battles.
- Near-Tier-10 power: Tier 9 tanks have fully competitive guns, armour, and mobility compared to Tier 10. Many Tier 9s (E 75, T-54, Object 704) are considered equal to or better than their Tier 10 successors in certain match-ups.
- Better economics than Tier 10: Tier 9 repair bills and shell costs are meaningfully lower than Tier 10. You can run standard ammo more comfortably and still be effective, whereas Tier 10 often pressures players into expensive loadouts.

Matchmaking at Tier 9
World of Tanks uses a ±2 matchmaking spread for most tiers. At Tier 9 this means:
- Tier 9 as top tier: You face Tier 7 and 8 tanks. Your gun penetrates everything on the map and your armour bounces the majority of incoming fire. These battles should produce high damage.
- Tier 9 as mid/bottom tier: All-Tier-9 or Tier 8–9 battles. Relatively uncommon, and even here you are competitive — unlike Tier 8 tanks being bottom tier in Tier 10 games.
- No Tier 10 in your games: This is the key advantage over Tier 8. You never face the Object 279(e), Chieftain, or other hyper-armoured Tier 10 vehicles.
The practical result: Tier 9 is the highest tier where you can reliably carry games using standard gameplay. At Tier 10 the skill ceiling and meta knowledge required increases significantly.
Best Tier 9 Heavy Tanks
Tier 9 heavies sit at the intersection of firepower and armour. The best ones are competitive enough to be worth keeping long-term even after you unlock the Tier 10.
- E 75 (Germany): The benchmark Tier 9 heavy. Exceptional armour, reliable gun, and strong hull-down capability. One of the best tanks at the tier regardless of meta. The grind to it via the Tiger II is well worth it.
- Object 257 (USSR): Near-impenetrable side armour makes it a sidescrape king. The spaced hull armour bounces an enormous amount of fire. Slightly weaker turret than the E 75 but faster and harder to damage when angled correctly.
- WZ-111 model 1-4 (China): High alpha, good hull-down turret, reasonable mobility. Strong on corridor maps where its 440 alpha one-shots lower-tier enemies frequently.
- AMX 50 120 (France, autoloader): 4-round clip with 400 alpha per shot. Cannot mount a Gun Rammer — replace it with Vents or Turbo. High burst but fragile armour; reward for good positioning.
- T54E1 (USA, autoloader): 4-round clip, flexible turret, surprisingly good armour for an autoloader. Strong DPM between clips when played as a flex heavy.
Best Tier 9 Medium Tanks
Tier 9 mediums are where the medium tank class truly comes into its own — fast enough to contest vision, accurate enough to snipe, and punchy enough to trade with heavies.
- T-54 (USSR): The iconic Tier 9 medium. Exceptional turret armour, strong DPM, great mobility. One of the most played and most effective tanks at the tier. Leads to the Object 140 and T-62A at Tier 10.
- E 50 (Germany): Outstanding accuracy and gun handling for a medium. Brawls better than its class suggests due to sloped frontal armour. Strong on open maps and ridgelines.
- Leopard PTA (Germany): Exceptional view range, superb accuracy, and the best gun handling at Tier 9. Fragile hull but devastating from distance. Best on open maps; avoid city fights.
- Object 430 (USSR): Lower profile than the T-54, slightly better gun depression, competitive armour. Strong all-rounder leading to the Object 430U at Tier 10.
- M46 Patton (USA): Excellent gun depression, good accuracy, versatile across map types. Strong crew trainer for the M48A5 Patton line.
Best Tier 9 Light Tanks
Tier 9 lights are the fastest tanks on the battlefield with the highest base view range. They set the vision game for their team and can deal meaningful damage between spotting runs.
- LTTB (USSR): Arguably the best Tier 9 light. Exceptional speed, good gun for the class, and enough HP to survive contact. Active scout with genuine damage potential.
- AMX 13 90 (France, autoloader): 6-round clip with fast intra-clip reload. Devastating burst damage on isolated targets. Leads to the EBR 105 — one of the most impactful Tier 10 lights.
- WZ-132A (China): High alpha for a light tank, good mobility, and a competitive gun. Strong hybrid scout/damage dealer.
- T-54 ltwt. (USSR): Shares characteristics with the T-54 medium — tough turret, good DPM, but faster. Versatile across map types.

Best Tier 9 Tank Destroyers
- Object 704 (USSR): Assault-style casemate TD with brutal 750 alpha from the BL-10 gun. Thick frontal armour and good speed for a TD. One of the most feared Tier 9 TDs when played aggressively.
- Tortoise (UK): Extraordinary DPM — the highest of any Tier 9 TD. Very slow but nearly impenetrable frontally. Best on corridor maps where its rate of fire shreds anything in the lane.
- Strv 103-0 (Sweden): Exceptional camo and accuracy in siege mode. Strong passive sniper on open maps. Leads to the Strv 103B, one of the best camo TDs in the game.
- T30 (USA, turreted): High alpha (750), full turret rotation, and competitive armour. Versatile — plays like a heavy/TD hybrid. Solid choice for players who dislike fixed-gun TDs.
- Jagdtiger (Germany): Reliable long-range casemate with excellent penetration and accuracy. Strong on maps with clear sight lines; less effective in close-quarters.

Equipment & Crew at Tier 9
Standard equipment builds apply at Tier 9. With repair bills lower than Tier 10, you can afford to run a more efficient loadout rather than defaulting to expensive Bounty equipment on every tank.
Equipment by archetype
- Standard heavy/medium: VStab • Rammer • Vents. Swap Vents for Turbo on heavies that need to claim early hull-down positions.
- Brawler/assault TD: VStab • Rammer • Improved Hardening. Extra HP absorbs more return fire in close-range exchanges.
- Sniper TD: Rammer • Vents • Binocular Telescope (or Coated Optics if you reposition frequently).
- Light tank: Coated Optics • VStab • Turbo. Vision + gun handling + speed for active scouting.
- Autoloader (no Rammer): VStab • Vents • Turbo or Optics depending on role. See our autoloader equipment section for full loadouts.
Crew priority at Tier 9
By the time you reach Tier 9 your crew should have at least 2–3 perks. Priority order:
- BIA (Brothers in Arms): 5% across all skills — strong return at any stage.
- Repairs: Tier 9 brawls are punishing on tracks and modules. Mandatory on heavies and TDs.
- Snap Shot + Smooth Ride: Stack with VStab for significantly better on-the-move accuracy.
- Concealment: Core for all TD lines and light tanks.

Credits & Economy at Tier 9
Tier 9 is not a credit farming tier, but it is sustainable — especially compared to Tier 10.
- Standard ammo only: Running full AP/APCR standard rounds at Tier 9 is viable. You face enough Tier 7–8 tanks that your standard pen is sufficient for the majority of targets. This keeps costs low.
- Premium account multiplier: A Premium account gives +50% credits on top of base earnings. At Tier 9 this typically shifts a break-even session into a profit.
- Avoid overusing premium consumables: Large repair kits and food are expensive at this tier. Use them selectively — large kit on maps/modes where module damage is common, skip food if you are not comfortably profiting per session.
- Credit top-ups: If your Tier 9 grind is draining your credits, rotate Tier 8 Premium tank sessions in between. See our Earn Credits Fast guide for specific farming strategies.
Grinding to Tier 10
Unlocking a Tier 10 from Tier 9 requires between 200,000 and 300,000 XP on the Tier 9 vehicle, depending on the line. Here is how to reach it faster:
- Prioritise modules strategically: You do not need to unlock every module before the Tier 10. Research the top gun and engine first — they give the largest performance gain. Skip hull upgrades or tracks if they are expensive and you plan to move on quickly.
- Premium account (+50% XP): The single biggest multiplier. A session that earns 1,500 base XP becomes 2,250 with a Premium account. At this rate, 200,000 XP is approximately 90 battles instead of 133.
- Daily double: Each tank gets a 2× XP bonus on its first battle of the day. Log in, play your first game on the Tier 9, then continue. Over a week this adds up to a meaningful bonus.
- XP boosters: Save these for high-performance sessions when you are already playing well — a 4,000 damage game with an active XP booster is far more valuable than burning one during a 1,200 damage battle.
- Free XP conversion: If you are close to unlocking the Tier 10 and have accumulated Free XP, convert gold to Free XP (1 gold = 25 Free XP) to bridge the gap. Only worth doing if you are within ~15,000–20,000 XP of the unlock.

FAQ
Why is Tier 9 called the sweet spot in World of Tanks?
Tier 9 can only see Tier 7–9 battles — there is no Tier 11, so you are never bottom tier in a +2 game like Tier 8 tanks are. Combined with near-Tier-10 power and lower repair costs, it is widely considered the best tier to play.
What are the best Tier 9 tanks in 2026?
By class — Heavies: E 75, Object 257, WZ-111 1-4. Mediums: T-54, E 50, Leopard PTA. Lights: LTTB, AMX 13 90. TDs: Object 704, Tortoise, Strv 103-0. The T-54 and E 75 are the most universally recommended regardless of playstyle.
Do Tier 9 tanks earn credits?
Tier 9 breaks even to modest profit on standard ammo. A Premium account reliably pushes sessions into profit. For dedicated credit farming, Tier 8 Premium tanks are more efficient — see our Earn Credits guide.
How much XP does it take to unlock a Tier 10 from Tier 9?
Typically 200,000–300,000 XP depending on the line. A Premium account (+50% XP) and daily double XP battles significantly reduce the number of games required.
Should I skip Tier 9 with Free XP?
Generally no. Tier 9 is the most enjoyable tier for most players and it is where you develop the skills needed at Tier 10. Reserve Free XP for expensive modules, not entire vehicles. The exception is an exceptionally weak Tier 9 on an otherwise strong line.
